SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act, is a bill going through Congress that would put America behind its own Chinese firewall.
Website Blocking
With this bill, government can order Internet service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users. Websites like Reddit, Tumblr, and even Youtube, are fair targets to be shutdown.
Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users
It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.
Chaos for the Internet
Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn’t be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.
How to Fight Back
If this law passes, you’ll wake up to find sites you love blocked by the US government. Tell Congress to vote “no” on SOPA. Contact your congressman to tell them your against the bill, either by calling their office, writing a letter, or sending a prepared message though americancensorship.org.
It is also useful to know who the enemy is. The following major companies support SOPA. You can write or call the companies to let them know you are boycotting their services and products unless they end their support for the dangerous bill.

We need to heed the warning of this threat to our freedom. Murphy's law states, "If anything can go wrong, it will." Did you see how many corps want SOPA?
I am definitely contacting my representatives to tell them to vote down SOPA; as we ALL should do.
Kenneth Garret is a freelance photographer, btw
Wow, many people consider these corporations to be devious and terrible, but now they've really made an emphases on where they stand. It's almost absurd. They're taking a role much like an evil villain in a cheesy Bollywood movie. They of all people should understand the industry enough to know what a bad publicity move looks like.
Isn’t America all about the freedom of it’s people? Isn’t that why it was colonised in the first place? Isn’t that why Independence Day is celebrated every year? What kind of bullshit is this >.>
I’m not even American, I hear about this and I’m instantly against it. It’s almost as if your guys government is having a huge power trip.
I have little to no idea how the laws or amendments, or whatever, work but I do know that this kind of bill just shouldn’t even be considered. I don’t give a fuck about Copyright. If you put it up there, you run the risk of it being stolen, simple as that. If you don’t want that to happen then either pay big money for the protection, or don’t put it up….
That’s my view on this subject. Everyone is entitled to their opinion (apparently) so that’s mine. If I could help stop this I would.
What makes me sick is these stupid film and tv companies dont make the digital products available for everyone
I refuse to use a credit card, so paypal is my only option, I have yet to find a site (at least for canadians) to purchase digital movies, music, and tv content using paypal
The consumer is the money and the money is the power, and we do have the right do demand things our way, and If I would rather a digital collection than a bunch of dvd’s sitting on a shelf taking up space, well then thats what they will have to provide for me or they dont have my business
Maybe instead of being a bunch of legal bullies they should worry about creating ways for the average joe to access to their products the way they want to.
