If you’re buying an Xbox game at Target, the clerk may want to scan your driver’s license. If you’re dropping off a package at UPS, the clerk may want to scan your driver’s license. If you’re buying a drink at the bar, the server may want to scan your driver’s license. If you’re buying medicine for a cold, the pharmacist may want to scan your driver’s license.
America is nearing the police end game state now, requiring people to prove their identities to do anything. It’s the modern version of “Papers, please”, when proof of identification was required to travel anywhere within Nazi Europe in WW2.

That's one way to do it, but even if you don't have a driver's license, I think some places still require people to carry state-issued I.D.
