Obama, Biden Welcome Pope Francis / FEMEN Protests

In 2012, POUS said “I think same-sex couples should be able to get married” on “Good Morning America.” Then in the 2013 State of the Union, “restore the basic bargain that built this country… get ahead… no matter who you love.”

In February a Vatican Archbishop defined marriage “only between a man and a woman” and likened same sex marriage to a “sick egalitarianism.”

NARAL had endorsed Obama’s 2012 reelection, describing him as “pro-choice” on NARAL.org. On Nov 7th, Reuters reported on a statement to the president-elect about promoting “a culture of life” from the Vatican.

It’s perhaps unsurprising that activist group, FEMEN–which identifies as an “international women’s movement” based in Ukraine–protested in Vatican City on Tuesday (from RT.com). A video shows a protester shouting “Pope No More!”

More surprising is that Joe Biden will “lead the U.S. delegation to next week’s formal installation of Pope Francis” (from CNN.com).

Biden is quoted:

“The Catholic Church plays an essential role in my life and the lives of more than a billion people in America and around the world, not just in matters of our faith, but in pursuit of peace and human dignity for all faiths.”

President Obama congratulated Pope Francis with, “I look forward to working with His Holiness to advance peace, security, and dignity for our fellow human beings.”

The use of “dignity” may allude to the aforementioned topics.
