Mulder and Scully have become legend through their desire to discover the truth behind many conspiracies and make it known. Conspiracy theories have become an integral part of our culture and the era of global communication has seen them spread like never before. In July, 1999, when John F. Kennedy Junior’s plane crashed, it took but 24 hours for speculation to reach the surface. On September 11, when the first plane came into collision with the towers, conspiracy theories had spread before the first brick fell.
Why do such things happen, and why does it seem as if we need conspiracy theories? In part, it is a reaction to the times in which we live. In an era in which most people have no faith in political, scientific, commercial, or military institutions, we are deluged by information which we often find difficult to believe. There are many scary, unexplained things in the world which we cannot comprehend or control. Conspiracies help us not feel so deprived of power. Instead of being simply helpless victims of some unknown intrigue, we get inside an event.
